A Post About How Cute My Little Guys Are Surfing

The little boys had surf camp one day this week with Village Surf Shoppe in Garden City, SC.

This post is really just to show off how cute my kids are.

Mack will ride all day.  He’s thinking it’s time to get his own board.  I’m thinking I agree with him.

I’ve got about a bajillion pictures that I haven’t even had time to look at yet.  Maybe I’ll find some cute ones to share soon.

And yesterday, we spent the most amazing day at Huntington Beach State Park.  The boys and I hiked every trail, went surf seining and did our fair share of wildlife watching.    Pictures and stories soon!

Happy Friday everyone!

Surfside Beach Blow Up

Recipe for Disaster.

One Very crowded Beach.

Fourth of July Crowds on the beach, crowds for fireworks, Surfside Beach, SC, Coastal SC

High tide coming in.

  {The beach will be even more narrow by dark.  Perhaps half this size.}

More narrow and more crowded.

People will really start to fill the beach at dusk.

Less beach, more people.

About 1/3 of these people will light fireworks illegally.

It’s against the law here to discharge fireworks on the beach.  But, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that rule enforced.

We have a fireworks show from our porch five nights out of seven.   I’m not complaining, just stating a fact.

A good portion of the illegal pyrotechnics will be lit by this family.

Who as far as I can tell have no children.  I look for them.  It would explain so much.

I mean, sometimes, we spend ridiculous amounts of money doing weird things for our kids.  Sometimes raising kids can feel like burning money.

I want to be able to justify the rough tote that is only partially unpacked as I happen by.

Sadly, I cannot.

Fireworks, family setting up fireworks display, Surfside Beach, SC

I’m pretty sure they deserve their own WTF Wednesday post.

fireworks on the ground, display set up fireworks, Surfside Beach, Fourth of July

I keep glancing back and they never seem to reach the bottom of the box.

Okay, to recount!

We’ve got a crowded beach that’s getting more crowded as the sun goes down.

A high tide that’s coming and we’ll easily cut the space to put all of those folks in half.

And a family equipped with an arsenal and it seems, the intention of blowing the whole place up.

Pair these conditions with wind.  Lots of wind.

And somebody’s losing an eye.

Won’t be one of mine though.  I make the executive decision to keep all of our eyes safe, at least for another night.

We will watch from the porch.

And ponder how much fireworks related traffic that the local ER will get tonight.

I hate not being in the mix, but it seems like all of Surfside Beach has collectively decided to practice poor judgement and I just like to go against the grain.

I’ll save my poor judgement for another day, thank you very much.

Link up over at Funny or Snot , with the very funny Poppy, if you’ve got one of those moments that leaves you…..wondering, WTF?

The Best Seat in the House

School is out.  Sort of.  We’ve skipped the last few days, because, I don’t think they count anyway.  As far as I can tell, they stop taking attendance.   They’re just enforcing that ridiculous 180 day rule.   And I’m sure they aren’t introducing new concepts that will be crucial to the next grade.

So, we’ve run off to the beach.

And I am spending my morning on the porch.  It’s officially summer for us now.  And I am feeling all kinds of peace.  I have waited since August to get back to this spot.  And to this feeling.  Ahhhhhh……..Freedom.

Summer is full of promise and possibility.  My most favorite time of year.

And here I am, perched at the very beginning of my most favorite season.  At my very favorite time of day.  In my absolute  favorite seat in the house.

And all is right with the world.

Enjoy your summer folks, I sure plan to!

Wetting a Hook

You get a line and I’ll get a pole, Honey,
You get a line and I’ll get a pole, Babe.
You get a line and I’ll get a pole,
We’ll go fishin’ in the crawdad hole at the Surfside Pier,
Honey, Baby mine.

Fishing is a good way to spend a day.

Especially when you get a bite.

Sometimes you have to fight a shark for your fish.

Adam was reeling one in and a shark jumped up and tried to steal it.  But, fortunately for the fish, it was caught by a peaceful fisherman.

(Sharks are a running theme here at Lula Lola)

Even taking really poor, freakishly grainy pictures of sharks can be quite exciting.

But, we’re a catch and release kind of crowd.

Nope. No blood lust in this crowd.

Good thing River City Cafe is right over the dunes otherwise, we could go hungry.

The boys are so against tormenting fish that they didn’t want them to leave the fish out of water long enough to even get a picture.

Mack caught a little shark and it had to have the hook removed so I had a chance to snap a picture.

The whole time the kids were begging their dad to hurry and get it back in the water.

Fishing is a good time.

When we go fishing, everyone leaves happy.

Even the fish.

Happy Days!

Shark Week Booty

I haven’t fallen off the earth! I’ve been out playing with my husband and some friends for the last couple of days, that coupled with a some computer problems and I’ve been out of the loop.  I’ve missed you!
If you don’t know about our unexpected shark encounter, check it out first. You need the back story for this to make a lick of sense!  Go ahead and click on it, it’ll open in another window.

After my husband and son were terrorized by a 19 foot great white shark(or actually, accidentally swam with what was probably a nurse shark the size of a first grader) I, of course, did the obvious thing. I blogged about it. I then tweeted about it.  And within an hour received an email from a publicist for the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. He wanted to send us a press kit.  I was pretty sure talking to our country butts on camera was not a good idea.  The south gets enough bad press without my accent making things worse.

I had no idea what a press kit was, but gave him our address and within a couple of days we got this really cool box.

A shark swam under my surfboard and towards my first-born, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.  It’s actually not a lousy t-shirt at all, it’s really soft and well made!

They also sent 2010 Shark Week DVDs.

Sharks by nature just look scary, but these videos actually made you feel better about swimming with them.

The Discovery Channel donated money on our behalf to Oceana.  They’re “the world’s largest international conservation organization focused on protecting and restoring the world’s oceans.”  That was the coolest part.

Adam is now the owner of a virtual shark named Fineas. Looks fierce, doesn’t he?

So, here’s what I’m wondering. If you get all this cool stuff just for getting close to one. What prizes do you get if it takes a nibble?  Not at all interested in finding out personally, just curious.

I don’t know why we’re so surprised when we see a shark.  We’re the ones playing in their backyard.

People swim every day. Lots of people. And you only hear of a shark bite very rarely. And then, it’s not generally an attack, once they get a taste, they usually realize ”human” is not their flavor and they back off. So, I’m convinced they don’t want us. And after Adam and Wayne were that close to a shark and it did nothing, I’m even more convinced that they’re nothing to worry about.

I know tons of people who have been in car accidents, and yet I get in a car every day and don’t give it a second thought.

I know not a single soul who’s ever been bitten by a shark. And even if I did, I’d still get in the ocean. There’s just not enough risk to make it a valid fear.

I’m too busy freaking out about mice, a clear and present danger.

We did stay out of the water for a few days.

Logically, I knew it was no big deal.  I am a mother though.  And that feeling in the pit of my stomach needed to catch up with what I knew in my head.

After a few days, reason won out over emotion and we were back to the beach. I’m not worried, but I have to admit, I spend just a little more time looking for fins!

Have a great day!  I’ve got lots of catching up to do!
